Background of the Study
Cross-border logistics refers to the management of the movement of goods across international borders, requiring the coordination of transportation, customs clearance, and compliance with regulatory requirements. Olam Nigeria, a major player in the agricultural and food sectors, has a significant presence in Benue State, where it sources agricultural products for local processing and international export. Cross-border logistics play a critical role in expanding regional trade and enabling companies like Olam to reach international markets efficiently (Ibrahim & Adeyemi, 2024).
In Africa, regional trade is crucial for economic growth, but it is often hindered by poor infrastructure, complex customs procedures, and logistical inefficiencies. Olam Nigeria faces several challenges in managing cross-border logistics, particularly in facilitating the smooth movement of goods from Benue State to neighboring countries such as Cameroon, Niger, and Chad. By optimizing cross-border logistics, Olam can expand its market reach, reduce transportation costs, and enhance the efficiency of its supply chain operations. The effective management of cross-border logistics can also help reduce delays and improve the reliability of trade between African countries (Musa & Fatimah, 2023).
This study will examine the role of cross-border logistics in regional trade expansion, focusing on Olam Nigeria’s operations in Benue State.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the potential for regional trade expansion through improved cross-border logistics, Olam Nigeria faces challenges related to customs delays, infrastructure bottlenecks, and regulatory complexities when transporting goods across borders. There is limited research on the specific impact of cross-border logistics on the company’s trade expansion efforts in Benue State, and this study aims to explore how Olam can optimize its logistics operations to expand its regional trade footprint.
Objectives of the Study
